Cold Process Soap Making:
This class involves making soap from scratch, using vegetable oils, lye and water, learning the magic of saponification. We will make an unscented and uncoloured batch and then a batch with essential oils and added colour (if desired). You will learn the chemistry of soapmaking, the importance of ingredients, and additives, and the basic techniques of this common soapmaking method.
Please note – you must be over 18 for this class, as there are safety issues involved. We will be working with active lye, and hot oils. Please wear comfortable old clothing, long sleeves and good shoes (no open toes), and be aware that this can get messy! If you have rubber gloves and eye protection goggles – please bring them along.
Cost is $90.00, duration is 2-3 hours. You will be able to take home the soap that we make in class, when it is ready at a later date. A mimimum of 4 students and a maximum of 8 is required to run this class. A 10% discount is given to both parties if you pre-register and bring a friend, and you will also receive a 10% discount on your first order of supplies with K&W Specialties Ltd.
Tentative date: Sunday August 11, 2013, 2:00pm at The Glass House – 991 Sydenham Road in Kingston.
Melt & Pour Soap Crafting:
This class involves learning how to melt, scent, colour and mold a pre-made glycerine soap base. Basic techniques will be taught, and all materials and supplies provided. This is an easier method as we are not working with hot oil or lye and is appropriate for children. Your fee includes one lb of soap which will make 4-6 bars of soap that you can take home immediately. (or pick up the next day)
Cost for this class is $60.00. Duration is 1.5-2 hours, and needs a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8. A 10 % discount is given to both parties if you bring a friend or child. A 10% discount is also given on your first order of K&W Soapmaking supplies. Children under 12 must be supervised by an adult, or older sibling.
